21 May 2020 News
My son plays tennis. He’s incredibly passionate about the sport and spends a great deal of his time training. Training is a mixture of tennis matches, working with coaches, coaching others, other endurance and fitness regimes or simply hitting a tennis ball for hours against a brick wall. The thing about tennis is you can’t really plan your next shot until the ball is returned over the net to you. Really, communication is much the same. To be actively engaged in a conversation or communicate effectively, you need to be in the moment and you have to be listening to the other party/person you’re with. Like tennis, if you’re present and ready to receive information, odds on your response will be much better placed.
This week, I started conversations with the Principals of the Madison advice community to ask how they envisage their next twelve months. I have to say, every single conversation has taken me by surprise. I’ve heard stories of generations, the changes advice has made to the lives of your clients, business aspirations, family goals and personal hopes. This is the privilege of listening to understand and learn. I imagine it’s the same feeling you get when you’re speaking to your clients. It’s easy to understand why you’re so invested in their lives, helping them to create the future they imagine (or dare to) achieve. I’ve also noticed your resilience and optimistic view of the future. And this is all via a computer screen! I have many more conversations to go and I’m looking forward to each one. When we get to the other side of this sale, I’d love to find a way for you to share your stories with each other. There is strength in numbers and there is wisdom in stories. Let’s use both to be better at what we do, be each others’ cheer squad and shape our community to create extraordinary advice businesses.
In a year from now, Madison will be in a very different place. One thing is certain, it will be your stories and aspirations that will be the driving force of our success. Back to my son, he is a great listener. I once asked, “How did you become such a good listener?” “By listening”. Thank you for letting me listen.
Sincerely,
Annick
