26 March 2020 News

If you happen to venture out every now and then, you’ll notice the silence.  You may also notice that you’re not navigating people (or car) traffic and you don’t feel as rushed.  Time no longer feels short (in some aspects) and your day job has become “the other kind of housework”.  I’ve heard it said many times, this is a “once in a generation”.  For many of us it will be.  For those new to our world, perhaps not.  What we learn, how we adapt and what we value from this experience as a nation, a global citizen and an individual is yet to be determined.  One thing that is certain, we will have a new frame of reference for the future.   In our imposed self-isolation, many good things have happened.  We are finding new and creative ways to connect; we are communicating more often and we are getting to spend time with people who matter most in our lives.  We are also seeing problems being solved creatively (check out  https://houseparty.com/ ), we’re prioritising better and we’re creating space for ourselves because we have to!   In amongst all of this, human spirit and connection will be what gets us through.  Those of us who fear robots taking over jobs and running the world, take a moment to reflect on how much you want or need human interaction right now.  There is a philosophical concept known as Aristotle’s eudaimonia, it’s broad definition reflects a“pursuit of virtue, excellence, and the best within us” (Huta & Waterman, 2014: 1426) to achieve happiness and wellbeing. In practical terms, it’s focussing on how we live our lives. Right now, in this ‘crisis’, we have the opportunity to choose how we live and how we want to be remembered.  Everyday, you are in our thoughts and we are committed to supporting you.  Everyday you inspire us with your generosity of spirit, your courage to take on the challenges before you and your ability to adapt.  When we get out the other side; and we will, let’s ensure the celebration is one that befits a new, stronger and successful Madison community.

Sincerely,

Annick
