Recently I’ve been involved in, or privy to conversations about leadership, ethical behaviour and the intersection between the two. The conversations have arisen in various social and professional situations. For example, Angus (my son) and I were discussing Nick Kyrgios’ recent behaviour in Cincinnati, which has now led to tennis greats Martina Navratilova and Jim Courier questioning his mental state and his ability to perform at the US Open. I asked Angus his views on the recent conduct of Kyrgios’ and he simply replied, “Kyrgios lets himself down. He’s a good tennis player with a bad attitude”. I think it’s a fair assessment of the situation. Navratilova is quoted saying, “He needs to start winning matches, then he can talk. We can’t give a moral pass to somebody just because he is potentially a great tennis player.”
Yesterday I had a conversation with someone about Cardinal Pell, his appeal and the conduct of ‘The Chaser’ group with respect to the plaque displayed at St Mary’s Cathedral.
And of course, I’m having conversations about ethics in financial services and what will it take to restore trust in our industry.
All these interactions gave rise to robust debates about potential scenarios, personal opinions and what is “wrong or right”. My views and responses to these conversations are not important for this newsletter. What is important is acknowledging ethics is a ‘wicked problem’.
Suffice to say, principles we’ve grown up with such as ‘the golden rule’, ‘the sunlight test’ and ‘what ought one to do’, aren’t as simple as they once were. So, where does this leave us? Perhaps another ethical dilemma to be discussed at a future date? However, whatever the decision made when posed with such a situation, perhaps a good course of action is to stop, think and then act.
Regards,
Annick
