A Note From Annick

If last year taught us anything, it was the value and importance of being surrounded by people and communities who truly care for the wellbeing and success of others.  Across the country, businesses, families have come together, and still do; finding ways to get through the myriad of complexities post a ‘once in a 100 year’ event.  This week I caught up with the Halcyon and Arrowstone teams.  From the moment I stepped in the door (greeted by Kylie), I could feel the positive energy.  In amongst their day jobs, there was laughter, humorous jibes and a very warm welcome.  Special mention to Annie, Tom, Cameron, and Tim.  It’s brilliant to see the next generation of our profession learning from, and with those who have lived many market cycles and yet, all sit in on a common plane in 2021. The icing on the cake was Hamish Pearce (welcome to the Madison community!) walking in with a box of Cadbury Favourites for everyone to share.  Despite these two busy practices having a very full agenda…Sean McGrath was in the thick of a client file and Mal Greentree has 5 new client appointments this week… the warmth and generosity of spirit exuded from every team member.  The time I spent with John Francis and Brian Lomas was productive, we discussed our strategic direction, and I used the time to gain their counsel and points of view.  I think John Francis coined it well when we discussed the year that was. He said, “we’ve reached a new level of resilience”.

Focus and clarity are key to achieving success in changing landscapes.  Focus keeps you to the task at hand and clarity ensures you choose the right ‘sliding door’ at the right time.  At time of writing, we await the passing of the Treasury’s response to the Royal Commission recommendations. This year we will see the remaining Hayne recommendations enacted, changing the way fees are communicated to clients, a move to the single disciplinary body and rigour across the way product manufacturers, platforms, trustees, and advisers determine product suitability for retail clients.  This is a lot to absorb and implement.  As the changes occur, Kerry Thomas and her team will communicate what this means for you, what needs to be done and how we will support you.  Behind the scenes, we are working with Opex and IRESS to implement the workflows and threads into our advice process environment.  You’ll hear more at the upcoming PD days and compliance workshops in the lead up to July 2021.

Kerry Fleming & Greg tell me many of you have engaged in the Active Review program and taken control of your file review process.  Thank you for embracing our new way of coaching and compliance guidance.  I’m keen to hear your feedback in the coming months.

During the next 3 months, you’ll also see the rollout of the Practice Business dashboard.  Megan and Jaime have a well-constructed rollout plan which includes weekly communication.  The first of which commences next week.

On February 11 we kick-off our wholesale advice pilot with a select group of advisers.  This opportunity is borne from adviser and client requests and we’re pleased to be able to support it.

We’ve planned our education and event calendar to November 2021.  All events will be in Workplace early next week so you can save the date and download a calendar reminder. Thank you to Mark Angus, Sophie, Jaime, Bethany & Loren (our Marketing Manager) for bringing the program together.

I’m delighted to announce the ‘Excellent Client Outcomes’ competition.  Many ‘wow’ client stories have been shared with us over the years.  We want to take these stories to the streets.  Australians will learn from other (anonymous) Australians about the difference #greatadvice makes when working with a professional adviser.  Winners will be announced monthly, and we will share the story on all our social platforms (client details anonymised) and promote your business.  The outside world needs to hear stories they can relate to, stories that make them stop, reflect, and act.  Sincere thanks to Amanda & Geoff Taylor for sharing a very special comment from one of their clients.  The conversation with the Majenda team became the impetus for this competition.  We want everyone in our community to participate.  Let’s start the year with positive experiences. In this edition, we launch a new column which we’ve called ‘Unfettered’.  I have the luxury of hearing John Abernethy share his views about topical issues and news stories which impact the lives of Australians.  JA’s ethos of educating clients to help them understand their money and the importance of getting quality advice resonates in his articles.  The conversations are animated, intelligent and he doesn’t pull punches. So, I asked him to write a regular column for us.  The first article is about the Superannuation system.  You’re welcome to share the article with your clients, and if you’d like John to speak to them via webinars or face to face events, let us know.

The team and I are really looking forward to catching up in person (fingers crossed the borders stay open, and WA re-opens).  Until then, we hope you remain safe and well.

Sincerely,

Annick
