September 11 News

Thursday 12 September is R U OK day for Australia. The charity has an aspiration to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with the people around them and start a conversation with anyone who may be struggling with life. The website states; “You don’t need to be an expert to reach out – just a good friend and a great listener.” On my way to work today, I heard a radio interview with the organisers and a comment resonated; “just be respectfully curious”. The speaker was referring to taking notice of the disposition of colleagues and checking in gently (respectfully) and demonstrating you’ve noticed something may not be right. Done this way, the other person can choose whether to engage in a personal discussion yet still knows someone is interested.

I raise this because we work within a community where things happen to us (and others) each day which could be easier to manage if the people around us are “respectfully curious”. It doesn’t always have to be personal matters, it can be work-related support. There’s an African proverb along the lines of ‘if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go with others. It’s like the expression, ‘a problem shared is a problem halved’. Working together to solve problems, sharing ideas and finding solutions that work towards overcoming obstacles and reaching collective goals is more important than ever before. We’re seeing evidence of this already across our industry in the way some institutions are running FASEA practice exam workshops and sessions (TAL, BT). The associations have joined with some insurers and a consumer group to review the Life Insurance Framework prior to a potential ASIC review at the end of 2021. The outcomes of these initiatives are unknown; however, the intent is on the right track. Being respectfully curious means, we ask better questions, we seek to understand, and we have a genuine care for those around us. One hopes that will lead to a better profession.

This edition of Madison News includes information about upcoming Xplan training, articles from the Investment Committee, the new FASEA announcements and other references which we hope you find useful. For those of you who have not yet registered for Conference and/or completed the ‘tech-savvy’ survey, please take the time to do so. I believe both will provide benefits to you and your business over time.

Regards,
Annick
